When a Cold Leaves Your Child's Hearing Muffled | Joyful Hearing & Speech Clinic
The cold has gone. The runny nose has dried up, and your child is back at school. Yet something has changed. The TV is louder than before. You call their name from the kitchen and get no answer. At school, the teacher says they seem to be daydreaming.
It is easy to think your child is simply not listening. Often, they cannot hear you clearly. A common reason is glue ear.
What Is Glue Ear?
The medical name is otitis media with effusion. In plain words, it is fluid sitting behind the eardrum. The fluid can be thin or thick and sticky, like glue.
Normally, a small tube links the middle ear to the back of the nose. It lets air in and fluid drain out. In young children this tube is short and works less well. After a cold, a throat infection or an allergy flare, it may stay blocked. Fluid then collects behind the eardrum.
Glue ear often follows colds, so you may see it more after the monsoon and during the winter months. It is usually not painful, which is why it is easy to miss.
Signs You May Notice at Home
Your child may:
- Turn up the TV or sit very close to it
- Say "what?" often or ask you to repeat things
- Seem inattentive, quiet or tired after school
- Speak more loudly than usual
- Miss you calling from another room
- Tug at their ears or say they feel blocked
- Seem a little clumsy or off-balance
Hearing may also go up and down. Your child might hear well one day and not the next.
How It Is Checked
An audiologist, a hearing specialist, will look in your child's ears first. Then tests may include:
- Tympanometry – a quick, painless check of how the eardrum moves. A flat result can suggest fluid behind it.
- Age-appropriate hearing tests – play-based listening games for young children, or beep tests for older ones
These show whether hearing is affected and by how much. If needed, we will guide you to an ENT doctor.
What Usually Happens Next
Glue ear often clears on its own as the tube starts working again. Many children simply need a recheck after some weeks. If the fluid stays, or hearing stays reduced, an ENT doctor may discuss other options with you.
Meanwhile, small changes at home and school can help:
- Get your child's attention before you speak
- Face them and speak clearly, without shouting
- Turn off the TV during conversations
- Ask the teacher to seat them near the front
Please avoid cotton buds or oil in the ears. They will not reach the fluid and may irritate the ear canal.
