Cochlear Implant
A cochlear implant can restore meaningful hearing to those with severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit from hearing aids. We provide pre-implant evaluation, counselling, and post-implant rehabilitation.
What Is a Cochlear Implant?
Unlike a hearing aid that amplifies sound, a cochlear implant bypasses damaged hair cells and directly stimulates the auditory nerve with electrical signals — providing the sensation of sound to those with severe or profound hearing loss.
Who Is a Candidate?
Cochlear implants are considered when hearing aids are no longer providing sufficient benefit.
Children
Children as young as 12 months with bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss who show limited benefit from hearing aids are candidates for cochlear implantation.
Adults
Adults with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and limited speech understanding with appropriately fitted hearing aids.
Post-Lingual Deafness
Individuals who lost hearing after acquiring speech and language often show excellent outcomes with cochlear implantation and rehabilitation.
