Understanding Hearing Aid Types
With so many styles and types of hearing aids available today, finding the right one can feel overwhelming. Hearing aids have become smaller, smarter, and more powerful than ever before. Understanding the basic styles can help you and your audiologist make the best choice for your lifestyle.
Behind-The-Ear (BTE)
This is the classic style where the electronics are housed in a durable case that sits behind the ear. Sound is directed into the ear canal via a tube and earmold. Pros: Powerful, durable, easy to clean, and great for children. Cons: Slightly more visible than other styles.
Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)
Similar to BTE, but the speaker (receiver) is placed inside the ear canal. This allows the casing behind the ear to be much smaller and more discreet. RICs offer a very natural sound quality and are currently the most popular choice for adults.
In-The-Ear (ITE)
Custom-molded to fit your outer ear. All components are housed within a plastic shell. ITE aids are easier to handle for those with dexterity issues and use larger batteries for longer life.
Invisible (IIC / CIC)
The smallest custom hearing aids available. Completely-In-Canal (CIC) and Invisible-In-Canal (IIC) fit deep inside the ear canal and are virtually invisible when worn. They are excellent for active lifestyles but may not be suitable for profound hearing loss or very small ear canals.
Making the Right Choice
The "best" hearing aid isn't just about size. It depends on the severity of your hearing loss, your ear anatomy, your lifestyle, manual dexterity, and budget. Our audiologists will guide you through a trial process to ensure you find the perfect match.
