A Pop, Then Muffled Hearing: What to Know About a Perforated Eardrum | Joyful Hearing & Speech Clinic
It may start with a painful ear that suddenly eases, followed by a little fluid on the pillow. Or a slap, a loud bang or a cotton bud pushed too far, then a sharp pain and a dull, blocked feeling. These can be signs of a perforated eardrum, and knowing what to do next protects your hearing.
What Is a Perforated Eardrum?
Your eardrum is a thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. It vibrates with sound and passes those vibrations inward. A perforation is a hole or tear in this membrane. It can affect how well you hear and leaves the middle ear open to water and germs. You cannot see the eardrum from the outside, so only an ear examination can tell you whether it is torn. Some people notice very little apart from a blocked feeling.
Common Causes and Signs to Watch For
- Middle ear infection: fluid builds up behind the eardrum until it bursts
- Objects in the ear: cotton buds, hairpins or keys
- Pressure changes: flying, diving or a blow to the ear
- Very loud sounds: such as an explosion or firecrackers close by
- Head injury
You may notice ear pain that eases suddenly, clear, pus-like or bloody discharge, muffled hearing, ringing in the ear or, sometimes, dizziness. If you have spinning, severe pain, a high fever or sudden major hearing loss, seek medical care promptly.
What to Do and What to Avoid
Keep the ear dry. When bathing, gently cover the ear as your doctor advises, and avoid swimming until you are cleared. Do not put oil, home remedies or any drops in the ear unless an ENT doctor prescribes them, and do not poke the ear. Many small perforations heal on their own with care and regular checks. Larger or long-standing holes may need further treatment, which your ENT will discuss with you.
