When One Ear Goes Quiet Overnight | Joyful Hearing & Speech Clinic
You wake up, reach for your phone, and something feels off. The alarm sounds flat on one side. You swallow, press on the ear and wait for it to pop. It does not.
Many people put this down to a cold, water in the ear or wax. Sometimes that is all it is. But a sudden drop in hearing in one ear can also come from the inner ear or the hearing nerve. That kind of change should not wait.
What Sudden Hearing Loss Can Feel Like
Doctors call this sudden sensorineural hearing loss. In plain words, the inner ear or hearing nerve has quickly stopped working as well as before. It often affects only one ear. It may appear overnight, or over a few hours or days.
You may notice:
- One ear feels full, blocked or "under water"
- Voices sound muffled or distorted on one side
- Trouble telling where a sound is coming from
- Ringing or buzzing in the affected ear
- Dizziness or feeling unsteady
Why It Should Not Wait
A blocked feeling can come from the outer or middle ear, such as wax or fluid. It can also come from the inner ear. From the inside, these can feel almost the same. A hearing test helps tell them apart.
This matters because the care is different. When the inner ear is involved, doctors generally advise seeing an ENT specialist as soon as possible. Early assessment may give you the best chance of recovery. Waiting a week to "see if it clears" can cost valuable time.
Please avoid cotton buds, oil drops or home remedies in the ear. These can irritate the ear canal and delay the right care.
If hearing loss comes with face drooping, weakness, slurred speech or a severe headache, go to emergency care straight away.
What a Hearing Assessment Checks
An audiologist, a hearing specialist, will first ask when the change began. Your ears are examined. Tests may then include:
- Pure tone audiometry – a hearing test with beeps that shows how much each ear hears
- Tympanometry – a quick check of how the eardrum moves, which shows whether fluid or pressure is involved
These tests are painless. They show whether the problem is more likely in the middle ear or the inner ear. Your results can then guide your ENT doctor's treatment decisions.
Life After the First Visit
Some people recover part or all of their hearing. Others may keep some change in that ear. Repeat hearing tests can track how the ear is doing.
If some loss remains, support is still available. Options may include hearing aids, help with ringing, and simple ways to manage conversations in noisy places. We explain each step clearly, at your pace.
